OUR CLINIC

Dry eye is an increasingly common condition in the 21st Century.

Our clinic aims to diagnose, treat and monitor the condition.

Dry Eye

The condition of Dry Eye and its associated conditions of Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland dysfunction are becoming more prevalent with our 21st century lifestyle. Research indicates that up to 20% of patients will suffer from such a condition at some time in their life.

The role of our Dry Eye clinic is to diagnose the problem, identify the cause as close as possible, to recommend a treatment regime to manage the problem and to monitor the condition as often as required.

The diagnosis of Dry Eyes is based on the concentration of tears (tear osmolarity) and up until recently the only way this could be measured was in a research laboratory. However, a new piece of equipment called a Tear Lab has been developed. At present we are the only Practice in the North East to have a Tear Lab. We have recently introduced the Spectrum Thea range of treatment products which have proved to be effective at alleviating patient’s problems. From our personal use of these products to date, we have been delighted with the results.

The initial examination will involve assessing whether the Dry Eye condition you have is due to lack of tear quantity or whether it is due to poor tear quality. Each appointment will take approximately 30 minutes and will include a detailed history and symptoms, as well as a questionnaire. This is followed by a battery of tests including the Tear Lab to gain as much information about the condition as possible.

The cost of this assessment is £69 and each follow up appointment will cost £49. The first follow up appointment will usually be 3-6 weeks after the prescribed treatment regime. Many patients will only require two appointments to be able to manage and control the condition themselves.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Practice if you have any further questions or would like to book a Dry Eye assessment. We would be grateful if you could specify that you require a Dry Eye clinic appointment as we have specific times set aside for these specialised appointments.
